Play #45 -- Small Island, National Theatre at Home, June 20

Small Island is a 2019 play adaptation of a novel about the relationship of colonizer (UK) and colony (Jamaica), as seen through the lives of ordinary Jamaicans going to the UK for a better life.  (The HMT Empire Windrush, a passenger transport ship, apparently brought many Jamaicans to the UK in 1948.)  Set during and after World War II, the play portrays young Jamaican men traveling across the Atlantic to serve their (colonizer) country and risk their lives in a war.  Yet even though they assumed they would be treated with respect afterwards, racism runs deep.

Another highly recommended, challenging play about race, power, white privilege/fragility, and the positive things individuals can do to create a little space for goodness.
